Pride: Why authenticity matters most of all.

Now that it's June, you many notice lots of companies changing their social media identities to the rainbow flag.

Yes, Pride is here... And there! And everywhere! At best, it's exciting and educational and a chance to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community and connect authentically with coworkers. But at worst, it's viewed as nothing more than a corporate stunt, and could get your company called out.

Many consumers today are highly engaged in the social issues they care about. They're keeping track, keeping score, and if you don't hold up your end of the bargain, they're also keeping grudges. So, if your company is planning something for Pride, you will want to make sure that you're walking the walk BEFORE you start talking the talk.

To truly celebrate Pride, it's not just about window dressing, social media posts, or externally-facing initiatives intended to generate good PR.

It's so much more about developing a culture where your company lives up to the values that it's broadcasting.

Sure, those outward statements help promote inclusive ideals throughout society, but if your company isn't doing anything internally to improve inclusivity, we recommend starting there before you go public. And not just to avoid getting called out, but because it's the right thing to do AND because you're going to learn a TON.

You'll learn about what experts think creates an inclusive environment. You'll learn about your employees and what's important to them. You'll learn about important dates, events, and milestones in LGBTQ+ history and culture. You'll learn how to discuss—or not to discuss—sensitive issues that impact employees' identities.

When done authentically, celebrating Pride month can help all your employees feel comfortable being themselves. It will help you learn and understand more about building a stronger, more inclusive team. It will help you better define and live your values.

So, before you take steps toward leading and setting a public example, make sure you're living up to your values internally.
