How to start strong in 2021 in 3 easy steps

As this year comes to a close, we're all ramping up for 2021. Because next year is going to be different. It's going to be better. It just has to be. Right?

Our clients keep telling us how important it is that they set a positive tone for 2021. But that won't just magically happen. It takes a little planning and forethought. Well, good news, team. Because we've got big plans for you!

The plan doesn't have to be elaborate or tricky. It just has to hit a few key notes. Start strong, then let others lead, and don't forget to make it enjoyable!

Step 1: Kick-off strong & together.

In January or early February, you'll want a company-wide kick-off event that brings the whole team together. A meeting of the minds that is both symbolic and strategic.

Your 2021 kick-off event will be more than just a meeting. It should occupy an afternoon or full day, and be a mix of facilitated strategic discussions and fun, engaging activities that make the event more interactive. The last thing you want is for your team to zone out, so a few games or connection activities should make it feel more personal and fun.

Pro tip: Consider breakout discussions on a few of the following topics:

  • The future of the business
  • Quarterly planning
  • How to improve company culture while working remotely
  • New product/service/sales strategy brainstorm

Step 2: Follow the leaders.

That kick-off event will be pretty energizing and invigorating. Your team will feel focused, motivated, and ready for action. Now, it's time to maximize that energy and turn it into results!

We recommend nominating team/priority leaders to be accountable for each goal. Whether that's leading a monthly team activity to strengthen your company culture or spearheading development of a new product, delegating has huge benefits for everyone! Not only does taking on a new role/responsibility help develop leadership skills for your employees, it also expands your reach and efficacy (strength in numbers) and increases buy-in. A win-win-win-win-win!

Step 3: Make it enjoyable!

Many employees who are working from home during this pandemic are juggling childcare responsibilities or feeling isolated. Sometimes it's hard to feel connected, and they're craving a little levity and a feeling of humanity because, well, life isn't all about work. So, as a leader of your company, it's important to take purposeful moments of joy, fun, and reflection.

Doing that virtually/remotely isn't that difficult. But it DOES take advance planning, a little extra love, and a knack for technology. Why not try a trivia game or a little human bingo? Or maybe you want something different—like a paint night, mixology class, or a fitness class. No matter what your team is interested in, there's a way to make life and work fun again.

Having a great 2021 doesn't have to be hard. It just takes a little planning and a lot of love. You got this!
